Get To Know Bravo’s “Invite Only Cabo” Star Larry Sims

Hair genius  to the stars Larry Sims, is a force in the entertainment industry. Originally from Chicago, Larry pursued dance becoming a choreographer before dominating as a hairstylist for nearly 10 years . Aside his long list of celebrity clients from Tracee Ellis RossZendayaKerry Washington and gal pal Gabrielle Union, Larry is responsible for Victoria Beckham’s  trendy, chic bob she introduced in 2008. With his hit Bravo show, “Invite Only Cabo”, Larry invites his close circle of friends together for a luxury vacation in Cabo. The funny, energetic, drama filled  series displays Larry’s personal life amongst his peers who never experienced a group vacation. I was able to catch up with Larry right before the season finale of “Invite Only Cabo” to talk show highlights, personal  accomplishments and future endeavors.

Q: Tell me a little bit about yourself.

A: I am a celebrity hairstylist and have been  for almost 10 years now. Some of my cliental include Gabrielle Union, Tracee Ellis Ross, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Kerry Washington, Sanaa Lathan and Victoria Beckham.

Q: When Bravo approached you about doing a reality show documenting the lives of you and your friends on vacation what were yor initial thoughts?

A: Honestly, I never wanted to do a mini documentary on my career. I did a competition based show previously and enjoyed that but when the producers from Bravo pitched me the show concept,  it felt right.

Q: Describe “Invite To Cabo” in 3 words?

A: Jaw dropping, mesmerizing and breathtaking.

Q: What’s your best memory from this season either on or off camera ?

A: One of my most fondest memories is the comradery people found in each other. When we started filming most of my friends didn’t know each other and had lots of differences. For instance, one episode Kamani was involved in an ATV accident. Although her and Bianca weren’t seeing eye to eye at the time everyone was still able to put their differences aside and be there for Kamani. Another favorite memory of mine  will be on the season finale so you have to stay tuned.

Q: What do you hope the show will do to propel you to the next level in the future?

A: I loved doing the show because it definitely gave me more visibility of who I am as a person and artist. It’s giving me the opportunity expand my brand into my other passions like fashion. I have a hat line in the works that I’m very hyped about, a book and am a current spokesperson for Smooth n Shine hair care products. This platform has offered me the opportunity to produce my own content as well and I’m so grateful for that.

Q: As a previous dancer/choreographer , are there any elements of dance that you incorporate in your hair artistry?

A: Absolutely! I’m an artist first so I’m always inspired by the clients I work with. I’m constantly bringing different elements of dance when styling hair. Because I have a strong eye for unique styles and performances I’m able to live vicariously through art which displays in my work. Being a dancer has also inspired my since of style. It’s a way of life.

Q: What song are you currently blasting this summer?

A: Definitely the new Rihanna record with DJ Khaled and Bryson Tiller. I’m loving Jay-Z’s 4:44. Sevyn Streeter is an amazing artist as well as Kevin Ross and is underrated in my opinion. Letoya Luckett’s new album is amazing as well.

Q: Who’s your current style muse?

A: Gabrielle Union. She’s one of my dearest friends and we have a lot of fun together. Right now she’s rocking a natural organic look and it works for her.

Q: What is one thing you wish you knew prior to filming your show?

A:  *Laughs* I never realized how time consuming a reality show actually is.  It’s literally 24/7 of your life being filmed with no breaks. When you wake up, a camera is there. When you go to sleep, a camera is there. Being on television/production is a lot of hard work but I’m happy to have done the show with support from  the right people and network.

Q: Advice to your 17 year old self?

A: Give yourself permission to be fearless in whatever it is you pursue. The first step is the hardest but you got this.

Be sure to tune into the season finale of “Invite Only Cabo” airing tonight at 9pm on Bravo!

EXCLUSIVE: Larry Sims Talks “Invite Only Cabo”, Decision To Do Reality TV & His Sexuality

Larry Sims On “Invite Only Cabo”, Decision To Do Reality TV & Sexuality

Larry Sims has been projected to be a charismatic, charming, down to Earth, hair stylist from Chicago. After years of hard work and grinding, there is no need to project: Larry Sims is everything people have been talking about. Before the successful 40-year-old was working with A-List celebrities like Victoria Beckham, Gabrielle Union, Tracee Ellis Ross, Queen Latifah, and Lupita Nyong’o – Sims was a dancer in Chicago that worked closely with R. Kelly and a slew of other artists.

Fast forward to today, he’s added reality star to his resume. During a recent interview with, Sims dishes on his new reality show Invite Only Cabo, his apprehension about doing reality TV and some of the backlash that he’s received. Check out a few excerpts below.

Why he decided to do reality TV:

It was one of those things where people have for years been reaching out to me, trying to figure out what would be a great fit for me – in terms of reality. I have been very particular of how I’ve crafted my career. And, I think I’ve really built a solid brand for myself that is really respected. I could see why be a potentially good look for production companies or networks to be in business with me. I wanted to do something that didn’t feel forced. I’m not a dramatic person. I’m not ‘ratchet.’ And I wanted to do something productive.

How he got involved with Invite Only Cabo
So, when 495 productions – the curators of Jersey Shore – SallyAnn Salsano, the owner too that company reached out to me and she said to me that she had my picture on her vision board for three years and that she was waiting on the right opportunity and the right project. It was perfect.
His apprehensiveness about reality TV:
The last thing I really wanted to do was give people a gateway to my personal life or their opinions about personal relationships with my friends. I definitely was apprehensive about that. But, I also felt safe because it was Bravo, Creme De La Creme.

If he was portrayed accurately:

I feel like I’ve been myself. There are things that you can’t control because it is only a 42 minute show. There a lot of things that people unfortunately don’t get to see.

What he thinks he received the most backlash on with his show:

The most backlash I’ve received is this fascination with [my] sexuality.

If he opens up about his sexuality on the show:

I’m absolutely going to live all of my truth out loud. I am a 40-year-old man, I don’t have anything to hide. I’m not afraid of who I am, and I’m very proud of who I am.

If there will be a season two:

It’s too soon to know. But we’ve definitely talked about potential ideas if it does come about. Regardless if it’s with Invite Only or another outlet, I definitely know this isn’t my last bit on TV.

Watch the season finale of Invite Only Cabo this Sunday 9/8c on Bravo!

The 5-Minute Beach-To-Bar HairstyleExplained By Kerry Washington &Zendaya’s Stylist

Now that it’s officially summer, it’s time to prepare your hair for the heat. Larry Sims, celeb hairstylist, explained the perfect 5-minute beach to bar hairstyle you need to try ASAP & you can get the exact how-to right here!

With summer in full swing, we caught up with top celebrity hairstylist, Larry Sims, who also stars in a new Bravo show, Invite Only Cabo, to talk about his go-to summer hairstyle. Larry’s celeb client roster is absolutely insane and he works with Zendaya, Kerry Washington, Gabrielle Union, Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Victoria Beckham and more. Larry explained that the easiest and best hairstyle to try out this summer if you’re heading straight from the beach to the bar is a top knot and Zendaya just showed hers off!

Larry shared with us a quick little tip in terms of product to use when you’re headed to the beach, “Make sure you pack in your bag, Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Oil Nutritive Split-End Serum. It’s going to protect your hair from the UV rays & when it dries, it’s going to give you a gorgeous, beachy finish.” Larry suggests using Gliss products for hair repair, “they’re really good to be used for hair treatments & maintaining your hair & treating it after you use a lot of heat on it.” Also, if you’re heading out after the beach, Larry said, “Just throw your hair up in a top knot and have a great time, have a shot of tequila, you can dance all night, you can sweat in that hair, and the messier the better.” How hilarious is he?

As for what products Larry likes to use when styling hair and what he suggests — drugstore products! “I’ve never been a believer that the more expensive the product, the better it is. The cheaper products are sometimes better. My clients also, as rich as they are, they don’t spend a lot of money on products – it’s not necessary. I definitely incorporate things that are accessible to everyday people. The narrative is, you can get these great celebrity, expensive looking red carpet looks with spending a fraction of the cost on the products that you use.” One of his fave products, “Got2b Glued hairspray – there’s just nothing like it. it’s used for really high, crazy hairstyles — it’s multi-useful.”

What do you guys think of Larry’s 5-minute hairstyle? Will you try it?

How to Style a Crown Braid This Summer, According to Gabrielle Union’s Hairstylist

Braids are a popular summer go-to. They’re easy to do, protective and, most of all, pretty.

The only problem: As a popular technique, the more basic styles can lack the originality and sophistication you may desire. Your summer, possibly filled with weddings, graduation parties and other memorable moments, needs something easy, protective and unique.

Enter the crown braid, a clear winner in elevated braiding styles. It’s an up-do that can be dressed up or casual, depending on the styling. Plus, when it’s hot and sticky outside, this hairstyle keeps your hair protected and off your neck. Gabrielle Union, Vanessa HudgensKerry Washington and Ciara are just a few of the celebs that have taken the hairstyle onto the red carpet, proving the style’s noteworthy beauty.

Now, there’s a new crown braid that offers a major impact. After spending weeks filming Bravo’s “Invite Only: Cabo,” celebrity hairstylist and reality TV star Larry Sims came back inspired to create a summer style that’s versatile, always appropriate and original. The result: a gold-laced crown braid, which doubles as this season’s hottest braided style and accessory. This style exists where royalty meets practicality—a beauty dream.

Ready to hit refresh on the crown braid? Watch the video above for a breakdown of the look!

Step 1: Create the starting point of the braid at the top of the head.
Step 2: Grab your ribbon and double it up for a fuller look.
Step 3: Create three sections of hair at the starting point of the braid.
Step 4: Grabbing the middle section of the hair, anchor the ribbon.
Step 5: Braiding under, instead of over for a more refined look, keep the braid centered and tight.
Step 6: For long hair, double up the braid for a headband effect.
Step 7: Secure the braid with French pins.
Step 8: Loosen the braid and shift it forward.
Step 9: Pull down fly-aways.

Chicago Splash

The Chicago native takes the trip of a lifetime on Bravo.

Until now, you probably didn’t know Larry Sims by face or name — but you did know his work. The LA-based hairstylist is the creative genius behind Victoria Beckham’s iconic bob, and is in high demand with A-listers like Jourdan Dunn and Tracee Ellis Ross. Now, he takes the spotlight with his own reality show, Bravo’s “Invite Only Cabo,” where he brings six friends on a drama-filled vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Where did the idea for the show come from? 495 Productions — who did “Jersey Shore” and “Martha and Snoop’s [Potluck Dinner Party]” — are always cultivating ideas and coming up with different concepts. I’ve been on their radar. [They] gave me a call a couple years ago and presented this idea. … I’m always on the go with my clients, and I never really get to see my friends or go on vacation. So it was a great opportunity for me to go on a crazy dream vacation and actually bring six of my best friends together.

You’ve appeared on shows like “How Do I Look” and “Access Hollywood.” How has this TV experience been different? In those shows I’m there as the professional, the spokesperson, the level-headed Larry. [On “Cabo”] you get to see the Larry Sims my friends only get the opportunity to see. I’m really just being me.

Did you have to consider whether it would hurt your reputation with clients? Yeah, you always think about how reality TV can affect your brand. Bravo’s the crème de la crème, [so] I was in good hands. I needed [to protect] everything I’ve worked hard for. I didn’t do anything I’m ashamed of; I didn’t do anything that would tear my brand to shreds.

Speaking of your brand, you’ve styled everyone from Gabrielle Union to Zendaya — you gave her a mullet for the 2016 Grammys. How do you persuade celebs to trust you with the most unexpected looks? I’m known for doing things a little [differently], and that’s why I get called. I’ve been able to work with subjects who have trusted me to deliver outside the box. We attract each other. If you look at my track record, I’ve been blessed with girls who really don’t mind playing dress-up. It’s a meeting of the minds.

Where do you go when you’re back in Chicago? There is no food on the planet like Chicago’s, period. I always hit up Portillo’s and get an Italian beef; I always hit up Giordano’s. I drive through the West Side, just to reminisce and think about how I’ve come so far. My great aunt lives off of Lake Street on the West Side; I go over to her house. And I’ve got to get my Garrett Popcorn, of course.

EXCLUSIVE: Celebrity Hairstylist Larry Sims Promises a Dramatic Good Time With New Show ‘Invite Only Cabo’

What happens in Cabo no longer stays in Cabo..

Bravo is taking viewers along for a one-of-a-kind vacation with celebrity hairstylist Larry Sims on Invite Only Cabo, a new docuseries that finds Sims and six of his pals on vacation together in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

“I just couldn’t say no to it,” Sims tells ET. “I’ve been approached about doing reality for quite some time now, and I just wanted to do something that was organic, and I actually would’ve, without cameras, taken my friends on a vacation and thrown them in a house and, you know, here we are.”

Sims, who’s responsible for Victoria Beckham’s iconic bob and counts Tracee Ellis Ross and Gabrielle Union as clients, invited six of his friends on a four-week getaway down south — but here’s the catch: none of the guests knew each other!

“Everybody was themselves,” Sims says. “I actually had never gone on vacation with any of these people, and I’ve known these people, some of them, for over 20 years. So, a lot of it was my first time experiencing being out of the country in some place, for four weeks, with any of them. So, I was surprised.”

“I’m still friends with everybody that’s on the trip,” he reveals, before starting to laugh. “They aren’t.”

“My whole intention was to make sure that I showed everybody that there were more things that they had in common other than just me,” he adds. “I was kind of hoping to cultivate friendships that would be lifelong, as I’ve had really long relationships with everybody. Didn’t work out that way.”

Well, that might be because a lot of drama goes down in Cabo. As Sims notes, a lot can happen in 48 hours, so just imagine what occurs over four weeks’ time.

“There was a love triangle that was really hot and steamy,” Sims teases. “And crazy … It was one of those that, was it better to do this or, you know, did you guys cause more trouble than anything else?”

Sims describes the season as an “adrenaline rush,” both for the cast and for viewers.

“I’m excited to see it all,” he admits. “The thing about it is, it’s really full of emotions. You get the anger parts of it, and you get the heart, and you get laughter, and you get compassion for one another. You get passion, frustration. You get hangovers. So, it’s sort of like, you know, the full gamut of emotions.”

As for the cast member to keep an eye on, Sims says that’s Emily Moses. The Australian beauty is heavily featured in the trailer for picking off her press-on nails at the dinner table!

“We all got a little crazy in us, don’t we?” Sims asks.

“We are not cheating you guys out of a good time,” he finishes. “I can tell you that much.”

Gabrielle Union’s Hairstylist Loves This “Refreshing” Trend For Summer 2017

Good news: You can sleep in this style for three days.

If you’re headed to Cabo with Gabrielle Union’s hairstylist, trust that he’ll pack all the essentials to keep your hair red-carpet-ready. In fact, toting around heavy kits—those dryers aren’t light!—and hopping transatlantic flights is part of the job description for Larry Sims, the celebrity hairstylist who will appear on Bravo’s new show, Invite Only Cabo. It’s also what caused Larry need to need a vacation in the first place!

Larry’s in love with his craft, but it’s not always easy. “The long hours are taxing on your body,” the former backup dancer shared with The Lookbook. After dancing, the multi-talented stylist started his career as an assistant for Ken Paves—who tends to Jessica Simpson’s flaxen tresses—and has gained a steady stream of celeb followers since starting with a bang—or, a bob. “[Victoria Beckham] needed someone and Ken wasn’t available, so he sent me,” Larry recalls. “I was able to work with her to give her the bob, and the rest was history.”

Indeed, Larry hasn’t stopped snipping A-list locks since.” When I’m on set with Gabrielle [Union] for Being Mary Jane, we shoot 16-hour days,” the stylist reveals of his current day-to-day sitch. “There have been several times with Gabrielle, Mary J. Blige, and Lupita Nyong’o, where I’ve flown from Los Angeles on a red-eye to New York, then come right back to LA that evening.”

What makes Larry so in-demand? He names his modern aesthetic and razor cuts as the kryptonite that keeps clients coming back. Jut ask Kerry Washington—”she’s one of the girls that rocks my razor cuts the most,” Larry shares.

For summer 2017, Larry names textured hair and shorter cuts as major trends. “Women aren’t afraid to give themselves a big chop,” he said. “I’m also not seeing a lot of polished, finished hair. I think hair that has been slept in for two to three days has always been the best, and I’m seeing a lot of braids, whimsical textures, and people going off the beaten path in terms of what traditionally works with hair and style. It’s refreshing!” Catch the premiere of Invite Only Cabo on Sunday, May 14 at 9/8 c. And rest assured: there will be plenty of refreshing hairstyle inspiration.
